Sale 2687 - Lot 198

Estimate: $ 800 - $ 1,200
(PRESIDENTS.) Ribbon badge depicting Andrew Jackson over his famous toast: "The Union--It Must be Preserved." Silk ribbon, 4¼ x 3 inches; wear, moderate foxing, short early stitched repairs. No place, undated

Additional Details

President Jackson first uttered this phrase as a toast in 1830, as a rebuke to John Calhoun and nullification. It remained a popular rallying cry for Unionists straight through the Civil War. No other examples of this ribbon have been traced thus. We are aware of two other examples of a variant printing without Jackson's name printed above the portrait: one at the American Antiquarian Society, and another which brought $3875 at auction two years ago. Not in Fischer & Sullivan, American Political Ribbons.
